Dear Jacky,
Welcome to our first workshop. I think inspirational messages are grand. I think sometimes we need a pep talk, we need to feel inspired, we need to get motivated but then what. How do we actually do the things that change our lives? That’s what these workshops are for….to give you some guidance on how to apply some practices that have worked for me personally. Maybe they’ll change your life, maybe they won’t but in my opinion most things are worth a try.
List Out Possible Goals
Have you thought of your vision for the year? Can you list out 5-6 things you’d love to be able to do this year? For me I think some of my top goals are:
- Lose my last 10lbs of COVID/grad school weight that I gained in 2020. I’ve made a huge dent in the 25 lbs. I gained over the last few years. This is a continuation of a goal I’ve been working on since 2021. See all goals aren’t overnight things.
- Grow this blog. I started this blog last year but I started working on getting it up and running in 2021. It’s actually harder than you think to pick up followers even though website visits are good numbers. Being an influencer and being a writer are two different things and the path is not the same. Once I hit 500 followers I can start monetizing it.
- Work on my startup. I started a startup a year and a half ago. I put a lot of work into it and then haven’t done much since I had job searching and now job working to do. I’ve hit a point where it’s taking some heavy lifting to get to the next stage. The things on the to do list aren’t things I enjoy or want to do but they are necessary. I keep putting them off.
- Build a friend group. While I moved back to a place I lived before lots has changed over COVID and going to grad school. I’ve changed, friend’s life situations have changed, people have moved and I don’t find myself having nearly the free time I once did so friendships and socializing have taken a back seat.
- Get into a relationship. Okay this sounds way simpler than it is but we also need to be frank with ourselves. It has been 5 years since I’ve been in a relationship and mostly that’s because I’ve had more important priorities than meeting someone or making time for someone else. I could do some things like spend more time on dating apps, make more time for dates, ask people to set me up, spend more time in social settings and bars and join interest groups to increase the likelihood of this.
- Pay off my debt from grad school. I hate debt so much. I made wise choices to keep the balance reasonable and had some help to keep my house while I was gone. I’m not going to pretend that I did all this on my own that sets unrealistic expectations. I wouldn’t have gone back to grad school if the math didn’t make sense and a large scholarship wasn’t involved. So I am in a position that my debt isn’t a crazy balance but it is still a balance and that balance is something that needs to be resolved to free up money for other goals.
Choose 2-3 Goals and Leave the Others Behind for Right Now
Some goals just by going through the exercise above are going to jump right out as a priority to you. Some of your goals may be interlinked so if you achieve one it’ll help you achieve another one. Some goals may be now or never goals. Some goals will take years while others can be completed in a few months like training for a 5K or a half marathon. Think through all the aspects of your goals. This may not be a just sit down and choose thing. Let them marinate for a few days if you need to and then choose your top 3.
List Out Your Choices and Your Reasoning for Choosing Them
So which 3 are going to make the list this year?
#1-I’ve already made significant progress. It’s important to me to finish getting my health in order. Only when I feel well do I have the energy to tackle my other goals. I also want to fit into all my old clothes that are sitting in a box and I’d love the confidence that comes with feeling fit and healthy.
#3-The time is now. I’ve made it into an accelerator. I have a few months left in BU’s innovation program that I can take advantage of. If I ever get this to fruition it could be another stream of income that tackles #6. It exposes me to new people which could check boxes #4 or #5.
#6-This goal is a one and done. Once my debt is paid off, it’s gone. It frees up my money for #3 or #2 or a lot of other things. This one I know is doable if I’m disciplined and did I mention, I hate debt.
Eventually I hope #6 is gone from the list which frees me up for a new goal and #1 has already become a bit of a habit. After I’ve lost the weight, maintaining it should be easier, freeing me up for new goals.
Does this mean I’m not going to do anything to achieve the others? No I am but they aren’t going to be priorities and I can’t promise they’re going to get a lot of attention. I’ve already transferred my membership to a community group where I hope to meet some more people who could turn into friends. I’m continuing to write and post on this blog. I’m still going to stay open to a relationship if it falls into my lap. If my life feels like it’s getting overwhelming though, it’s going to mean a skipped blog post or canceling social plans, etc. Those will be the first things to go because they aren’t on my priority list right now.
So where do we go from here? We’ve chosen our goals but we haven’t broken down how we plan to get there. Start thinking about all the tiny changes and things you’ll need to do to set yourself up for reaching your 3 goals.
Get ready to make a plan,
Molly
