Dear Jacky,
I know you’re sick and tired of talking about goals but we aren’t done yet. That’s the thing…we like to give up instead of doing things right. We think exercises like this are pointless when in fact they are crucial.
List out your 2-3 goals and make them specific enough that you have to put some work in to achieve them.
Pull out your 2-3 goals you settled on and I’ll leave mine here to refresh your memory and mine.
- Lose my last 10lbs of COVID/grad school weight that I gained in 2020.
- Work on my start up.
- Pay off my debt from grad school.
As you can see these are large goals. There are a lot of ways to get to any of these goals and I think that’s the good news. Lay each goal out and list out subgoals or ways that you can work on achieving your goals.
- Lose my last 10lbs of COVID/grad school weight that I gained in 2020.
- Drink more water instead of soda.
- Work out 3 days a week.
- Eat at home instead of eating out.
- Cut out gluten. (There’s evidence that suggests I may have a sensitivity so I’m going to try this out to see if I feel better.)
- Sleep enough so I feel refreshed and so I don’t reach for caffeine every chance I get.
- Eat more vegetables and lettuce (I hate lettuce).
- Track my food with an app. (I’m a horrible judge of calories and tracking it makes me realize all the “cheating” that’s adding up.
2. Work on my startup.
- Make myself work on this one night a week.
- Make myself complete one frame a week.
- Find someone who can do this much faster and enjoys design work more than I do.
- Win funding to outsource this to someone else.
- Broaden my network to help me find a technical cofounder.
- Broaden my network to find someone to help with design.
- Meet with my innovation coach.
- Apply to accelerators and pitch competitions.
- Apply for grants.
3. Pay off my debt from grad school.
- Eat at home.
- Don’t buy frivolous things.
- No travel budget until this is done unless it comes from gift money.
- Keep an eye on my budget.
- Move debt to lower interest options.
- Use any passive income and money from holidays/birthdays etc. to pay down debt.
- Get a part time job.
- Sell off stuff on Facebook marketplace and put funds towards debt.
- Pay things ahead of time to eliminate additional interest.
Am I going to do any of these things perfectly? Absolutely not, which is why the lists are long under each goal which is sort of the point. If I do each of these things half way I’ll make significant progress. If I even do them 25% of the way then I’ll probably make a good amount of progress. It’s about persistence not perfection. If I fail one week at eating out, I go to the grocery store the next week and pick back up. I promise you I’ll never only drink water so that’s an unrealistic goal but counting it as a win when I sub out water for soda or even plain coffee with creamer for soda it’s considered a win. It’s the culmination of all the small things we do that set us up to see monumental progress.
Okay, you made it. We’re done with the hard part of goal setting. Now to the fun part or at least I think it’s fun. Making sure we reach our goals.
The little things add up,
Molly
